Senator Susan Collins Receives 2026 Legislative Recognition Award

Washington, DC — October 30, 2026 — The American Ambulance Association (AAA) recognized U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) with a 2026 Legislative Recognition Award on October 29, honoring her leadership in advancing policies that strengthen emergency medical services (EMS) and support access to lifesaving care in communities across the country.

Senator Collins has demonstrated her commitment to advancing policies that address the financial and operational challenges facing EMS providers, particularly those serving rural and underserved communities.

Among her efforts, Senator Collins joined Senator Peter Welch (D-VT) in introducing the Senate version of the bipartisan Comprehensive Alternative Response for Emergencies (CARE) Act (S. 3145). This legislation would establish a demonstration program through the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) to evaluate Medicare reimbursement for ambulance services that provide medical care to patients on-site without requiring transport to a hospital.

By supporting alternative approaches to emergency care delivery, the CARE Act seeks to improve patient access to appropriate care while addressing reimbursement challenges that have long affected ambulance service providers.

Senator Collins has also supported legislation aimed at protecting Medicare reimbursement for ground ambulance services and preserving access to emergency medical care, particularly in rural communities.

AAA is grateful for Senator Collins’ continued partnership and her efforts to find meaningful solutions to the challenges facing the EMS profession. Her leadership reflects the importance of ensuring ambulance providers can continue delivering essential healthcare. 

Senator Susan Collins is among 32 members of Congress selected to receive AAA’s 2026 Legislative Recognition Awards for their leadership and continued support of EMS and mobile healthcare. Additional recipients will be presented with their awards over the coming months, including during the Stars of Life celebration, taking place November 16–18 in Washington, DC, which honors outstanding EMS professionals from across the country.

Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez Receives 2026 Legislative Recognition Award

Washington, DC — October 23 — Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) has received a 2026 Legislative Recognition Award from the American Ambulance Association (AAA) for her continued leadership and commitment to strengthening the emergency medical services (EMS) workforce and supporting ambulance service providers and the communities we serve nationwide.

“When you call emergency services, the people who respond bring with them a unique combination of skill and bravery that you can’t get anywhere else. In rural areas–where we don’t take healthcare access for granted–the passions of public service and community building mean everything.” said Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez. “Thank you to the brave men and women at Medix Ambulance for taking the time to talk with me about the challenges facing EMS workers every day. I’m proud to continue making the investment needed to build a capable and durable workforce in such a vital field.”

As the EMS profession continues to face significant workforce challenges, Congresswoman Gluesenkamp Perez has advocated for solutions to recruit, train, and retain EMS professionals. Her introduction of the PARA-EMT Act demonstrates her commitment to addressing workforce shortages and ensuring communities have access to essential emergency medical care.

“Congresswoman Gluesenkamp Perez has done an outstanding job advocating for policies that strengthen the EMS workforce and advance commonsense solutions to help us provide care to our communities,” said Adrienne Brown, Paramedic and General Manager of Medix Ambulance, which serves communities in Longview, Ilwaco, and Chehalis, Washington. “Her understanding of the challenges facing ambulance services and her commitment to finding meaningful solutions make a real difference for the professionals and patients we serve.”

The PARA-EMT Act aims to strengthen the EMS workforce through recruitment, training, and retention initiatives. The legislation also includes provisions to help military combat medics transition into civilian EMS careers, recognizing their valuable experience and creating additional pathways into the profession.

Congresswoman Gluesenkamp Perez was presented with the award on October 21, 2026, by Adrienne Brown, Paramedic and General Manager of Medix Ambulance, and Mike Battis, AAA Board Member and President of the Washington State Ambulance Association, on behalf of AAA.

Congressman Mike Carey Named 2026 Legislator of the Year by the American Ambulance Association

Washington, DC — October 19, 2026 — The American Ambulance Association (AAA) is proud to announce that Congressman Mike Carey (OH-15) has been selected as the 2026 Legislator of the Year in recognition of his outstanding leadership and commitment to advancing policies that support emergency medical services (EMS) and the ambulance industry.

Congressman Carey has been a strong advocate for the EMS community, championing legislative efforts to strengthen ambulance services and ensure continued access to essential emergency medical care. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing the extension of the temporary Medicare ambulance add-on payments, which provide critical financial support to ambulance service providers across the country.

In addition, Congressman Carey sponsored the CARE Act, which would direct the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) to establish a pilot program exploring treatment-in-place models for Medicare beneficiaries. He has also advocated for federal fuel excise tax relief for nongovernmental ground ambulance service organizations, recognizing the financial challenges facing EMS providers.

“Congressman Carey’s dedication to strengthening emergency medical services and addressing the challenges facing ambulance providers is deeply appreciated,” said AAA President Jamie Pafford-Gresham. “His leadership on critical reimbursement and legislative priorities demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that ambulance services have the resources and support necessary to continue delivering lifesaving care to communities nationwide.”

American Ambulance Association to Celebrate 167 EMS Heroes as 2026 Stars of Life

Washington, DC — October 15, 2026 — The American Ambulance Association (AAA) is proud to announce the 2026 Stars of Life honorees, recognizing outstanding emergency medical services (EMS) professionals whose dedication, compassion, and commitment to serving others make a lasting impact on their communities. These honorees include paramedics, EMTs, dispatchers, and other EMS professionals who represent the very best of the profession.

The 2026 Stars of Life celebration will take place November 16–18, 2026, in Washington, DC, bringing together EMS professionals from across the country for three days of recognition and celebration. Throughout the event, honorees will be celebrated for their outstanding service, connect with fellow EMS professionals, and meet with members of Congress to share their stories and highlight the vital role of EMS in communities nationwide.

“We are incredibly proud to recognize our largest Stars of Life class to date, with 167 outstanding EMS professionals representing 40 states,” said AAA President Jamie Pafford-Gresham. 

This year’s record-breaking class reflects the dedication and impact of EMS professionals across the country. Each honoree brings a unique story of service, highlighting the many ways they make a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve.

“Every day, these individuals dedicate themselves to serving others, making a lasting impact through both the extraordinary moments and the everyday acts of care that often go unseen. It is an honor to recognize their contributions and share their stories on a national stage.”

American Ambulance Association to Celebrate 147 EMS Heroes as 2025 Stars of Life

Washington, DC—The American Ambulance Association (AAA) is proud to recognize 147 outstanding emergency medical services professionals as 2025 Stars of Life. These honorees—paramedics, EMTs, dispatchers, and mobile healthcare providers—represent the very best of EMS from across the United States.

The 2025 Stars of Life celebration will take place November 3–5, 2025, in Washington, DC. While some honorees will be recognized locally, many will travel to the nation’s capital to receive their awards, share their stories with policymakers, and celebrate the vital work of EMS. 

In addition to the Stars, Senator Susan Collins of Maine will be recognized as the 2025 AAA Legislator of the Year. The AAA will also honor eight Senators and seventeen Representatives with Legislative Recognition Awards for their ongoing support of mobile healthcare and the EMS profession.

Together, these 147 individuals embody the spirit of service and commitment that defines EMS—saving lives, strengthening communities, and inspiring others through their dedication.
