The American Ambulance Association (AAA) 2026 EMSNext Workforce Report presents a comprehensive, mixed-methods assessment of the current state of the emergency medical services (EMS) workforce across five U.S. regions. Drawing on original quantitative survey data and in-depth qualitative analysis, this study provides a multi-dimensional understanding of workforce conditions, challenges, and opportunities facing EMS agencies nationwide.
The EMSNext Workforce Project was designed to identify and analyze workforce trends affecting recruitment, retention, job satisfaction, and career sustainability within EMS organizations. The study employs a convergent mixed-methods design, integrating quantitative survey responses from 1,826 EMS professionals with qualitative analysis of open-ended workforce narratives. This approach enables examination of both the scale of workforce challenges and the lived experience underlying those trends.
Importantly, this study is intentionally positioned to complement existing industry research, including the AAA/N360 Turnover Study. While the AAA/N360 study captures leadership-reported turnover patterns and organizational perspectives, the EMSNext Workforce Project centers workforce-reported experience prior to turnover decisions. Together, these perspectives provide a more complete understanding of workforce risk and opportunity.
