Recent research has highlighted the need for greater diversity within the EMS workforce and the impact of systemic disparities on patient care. This mentorship-focused program is designed to equip EMS leaders, mentors, and aspiring leaders with the tools and strategies to help participants develop skills to support diverse mentees, address bias in workplace dynamics, and champion a bright future for the EMS profession.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the historical and current impact of racism on EMS and its role in perpetuating health disparities.
- Identify social determinants of health and how they influence EMS systems, workforce dynamics, and patient care outcomes.
- Recognize and address implicit bias and microaggressions, applying allyship and Upstander principles to mentorship practices.
- Leverage power and privilege as mentors to create equitable opportunities for mentees.
- Build safe and inclusive environments that support mentees from diverse backgrounds.
- Develop actionable strategies to enhance diversity and equity within recruitment, retention, and mentorship initiatives.
- Explore frameworks for embedding equity-focused quality improvement into mentorship and leadership activities.
This program features interactive learning through case discussions, small-group activities, allyship practice, and guided discussions to develop actionable plans for mentoring diverse talent in EMS. Unlike traditional diversity training, this session emphasizes practical mentorship strategies that participants can apply immediately.
