The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has been very active under the Biden Administration and the leadership of recently departed union advocate, US DOL Secretary Marty Walsh. In the last few years, petitions to the NLRB from employees seeking union representation has increased by 53%. Union representation is relatively common in EMS and public safety organizations. The promise of better benefits and wages is an easy sell regardless of whether the collective bargaining process results in an overall improvement in benefits and wages. This session will cover the process that follows the first whispers of union representation and the rules of engagement once a petition is filed with the NLRB. We will also discuss how getting to know, communicating, and engaging your employees is often the most effective way address the issues that most frequently lead to unionization.
