The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many organizations to close or reduce staffing in their offices to mitigate the risks of transmission. In the EMS workplace, employers have historically struggled to maintain a strong line of communication with their workforce. The pandemic has only exacerbated this problem. In the face of unprecedented turnover and other workforce challenges, HR professionals are working hard to engage employees in a deeper and more meaningful way. To attract and retain employees, HR professionals and other leaders are having to gain a broader understanding of those who seek employment in EMS beyond their professional aspirations. We will discuss how to balance this deeper understanding with maintaining a professional and compliant atmosphere and will highlight how the prior trend of employee self-service is being replaced by an employee-oriented customer service model.
