Lakes Region EMS, Inc. provides services to suburban and rural communities in Minnesota and Wisconsin. With over 1,000 square miles, they have 10 ambulances and over 70 employees.
Katie Arens
Katie serves as the Vice President of Customer Access at Life EMS Ambulance where she oversees the Billing Department, Mobile Health Solutions, and Control Center operations. Life EMS is a private for-profit provider in West Michigan with a service area covering more than 4200 square miles of Urban, Rural, and Super Rural communities in ten counties. Life EMS employs over 700 associates and offers Emergency, Non-Emergency, Wheelchair transportation, Personal Response Systems, Telehealth, and Integrated Care Paramedic services. Katie is the Vice-Chair for both the American Ambulance Association Medicare Regulatory Committee as well as the Michigan Association of Ambulance Services Reimbursement Committee.
Angie McLain-Johnson
Angela McLain-Johnson, MA, CHC, RHIA served as the Chief Compliance Officer and Chief Revenue Officer for Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) of Oklahoma, a high-performance, high volume, public utility model EMS agency serving communities across Northeast and Central Oklahoma. Angie’s more than 20 years of experience in healthcare financial services has focused on the strategic development and management of revenue cycle operations to include; comprehensive patient account management, revenue performance improvement and implementation of monitoring controls and strategies. In addition, Angela also has extensive experience in all elements of healthcare compliance and accreditation in both the hospital and EMS industry, ensuring organizational business practices exceed regulatory standards and support the provision of excellent patient care. Angie holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management, focused on health care reimbursement, and has an advanced degree in Health and Human Services. She has used her experience and expertise in healthcare finance and healthcare management to help establish EMS industry standards through active roles on multiple state and national boards; serving as with the Oklahoma Ambulance Association and as Region 4 Director with the American Ambulance Association.
Asbel Montes
Asbel began his career in the ambulance industry in 1999. His EMS career includes directing and leading teams that provided revenue cycle consultation to air and ground ambulance agencies, culminating into the position of Managing Partner of Solutions Group Consulting.
Asbel currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Ambulance Association (AAA) and numerous committees and board positions. More notably, he chairs the AAA Payment Reform Committee as the industry navigates the current healthcare changes and the correlation to the air and ground ambulance industry. He has also testified as an expert witness before federal and state health committees regarding ambulance reimbursement and veteran health initiatives related to emergency medicine. In 2016, Asbel was appointed to the Ambulance Transport Alternatives Task Force for the State of Louisiana by Governor John Bel Edwards. In 2020, Asbel was named to the Air Ambulance and Patient Billing Advisory Committee by the Secretary for the United States Department of Transportation.
Scott Moore, Esq.
Scott is a Massachusetts licensed attorney and possesses certifications as both a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and the Society for Human Resources Management Certified Professional (SHRM-CP). He is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), the Massachusetts Bar Association (MBA), the Northeast Human Resource Association (NEHRA), and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
In addition, Scott is an active member of the American Ambulance Association and has been a Site Reviewer for the Commission for the Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) for many years.
Brian Werfel
Brian S. Werfel, Esq. is a partner in Werfel & Werfel, PLLC, a New York based law firm specializing in Medicare issues related to the ambulance industry. Brian is a Medicare Consultant to the American Ambulance Association, and has authored numerous articles on Medicare reimbursement, most recently on issues such as the beneficiary signature requirement, repeat admissions and interrupted stays. He is a frequent lecturer on issues of ambulance coverage and reimbursement. Brian is co-author of the AAA’s Medicare Reference Manual for Ambulance, as well as the author of the AAA’s HIPAA Reference Manual. Brian is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Columbia School of Law. Prior to joining the firm in 2005, he specialized in mergers & acquisitions and commercial real estate at a prominent New York law firm. Werfel & Werfel, PLLC was founded by David M. Werfel, who has been the Medicare Consultant to the American Ambulance Association for over 20 years.
Steve Wirth
Steve Wirth is a founding partner of Page, Wolfberg & Wirth. In a distinguished four-decade public safety career, Steve has worked in virtually every facet of EMS – as a first responder, firefighter, EMT, paramedic, flight paramedic, EMS instructor, fire officer, and EMS executive. He was one of central Pennsylvania’s first paramedics. Steve brings a pragmatic and business-oriented perspective to his diverse legal practice having served for almost a decade as a senior executive of a mid-sized air and ground ambulance service, helping to build the company from the ground up.
